How to: Unlock / Jailbreak iPhone 2.2 Firmware
A couple of days ago new firmware for iphone version 2.2 was released and bring a couple of changes a couple of bug fixes (still there are too many bugs so dont get surprised) some more eye candy, some new icons and 2 new features Google Street View and Podcasts.
One of my friend was able to unlock/jailbreak this new version of firmware and successfully got it working on his iphone 2G so I’ll today enlighten you with the method he described on his blog.
So here we go
1. Download this Pwned / Jailbreaked iphone 2.2 firmware from following links

2. Extract first part with 7zip, winrar or any compression software and you get a single file named iPhone1,1_2.2_5G77_Custom_Restore.ipsw (245mb)
3. Connect iphone to your PC and open iTunes 8 (cancel if it ask you to update your firmware to new version)
4. Back all your iPhone data like contacts, music, video and other media.
5. Hold shift and click Restore and locate the Pwned iPhone 2.2 Firmware.
6. Now wait for the process to be done.
7. Enjoy using pwned / jailbreaked iPhone 2G with firmware 2.2
This method works on PC and MAC both without any extra tools such as WuickPwn and Pwnage tool and works flawlessly without any problem. So happy jailbreaking new firmware iPhone 2.2

Um, one minor problem here. I downloaded the files, I ran them through 7zip, but I cannot get to the restore button. When I open itunes and click on the iphone I just get a screen that says unauthorized sim card. Well, yeah, that’s why I’m here! How do I get to the bloody restore button?

Did you hold shift?
Hold shift at what point? The directions say to told shift as I click restore. I never get to a restore button. I can see the itunes library but when I go to the phone the only screen I get is the invalid sim card screen. There is no option to restore.

I held shift but nothing happened. Itunes still telles me that I have unauthorized sim card. Unfortunately I dont know where my at&t sim card is. What shourd I do??

I downloaded succesfuly pwned/jailbreak iphone 2.2 firmware but when i press shift and restore it fails to restore my iphone- it shows error 1604. What should I do?

are you trying to unlock iPhone 3G with this method??? because i tried 3 iPhones and successfully unlocked them and many of my friends too.
hey, is it normal that the bootneuter screen should come up after shift-restoring the custom image? or is it because i had it previously installed?

Ok, now I am about to purchase an iPhone in the UK where O2 is current the only provider that’s supported by the iPhone.
As I have a different provider which offers much better rates, I am wondering if the 2.2. version can be unlocked without losing its features and if it is possible to still access the apple online store with the phone? If I will lose features, can someone please advise which ones I am most likely to lose?

bootneuter screen is showing probably because you had it previously installed.

After unlocking iPhone to other firmware than stock you loose all the apps or features provided by the provider. This is the way you can use sim card other than O2 so i don’t think that should be an issue here. Side note from me: features and custom apps provided by different providers aren’t really as good as unlocked iphone you have freedom this way
Does this method work with a 2G iPhone running the official 2.2 firmware that had never been unloocked/jailbreaked before?
because i have tried this and i keep getting error 13 when trying to do this through itunes. also i am using a pc. does it matter if i use a pc or a mac because i can try both. also i tried quickpwn method and i get an error at the end when its trying to upload ramdisk…it says i may be in the wrong mode when i see that in the bottom right corner when iphone is recognized it says DFU mode.
If not what method you would recommend?
any help would be greatly appreciated. sorry for all the questions, im just so frustrated. you guys have been so much help in the past, i thought i would try again.

hey guys…i don’t know what i’m doing wrong….I can’t even get the custom firmware ipsw. When I try to extract, it says the file is broken/unexpected end of archive….
this method seems promising after countless hours of attempting other more complicated ways…

the file you downloaded corrupted in between, you have to download and extract archive again.
I need help, I installed firmware 2.2 on my iphone 2G and now, it is not working, no even opening. How can I unlock my iphone? Please help
It doesn’t work if your iphone was previously unlocked and you restored it to the newest update. Don’t bother.
For this method to work I believe u need to have pwned ur phone before hand and you know that as there will be a pineapple sign when u turn ur iphone on!!

I had a jailbroken 1.1.4 iphone 2G which eventually crashed.. I tried to restore wt itune to 2.2 but was gettin error 1604. I tried every possible solution available in web to solve dat but failed. Den I juz formatted da windows.. reinstalled everythin. N with iTUNE i hv restored my phone to firmware 2.2
Now i tried to unlock dat wt QuickPwn 2.2 but quickpwn is not opening… showing some error… Pls help…
