@jose – I have Luna on my XP computer – you are deadset kidding if you think it is so much better. It is a passable alteration to the fisher-price childish colouring of XP.
Not all those themes were grey, brown or murrine – besides brown in a lot of these themes isn’t actually ugly.
Finally – great putting access to themes – maybe a “how to” would help for some. Also, you can customise themes, so that you could use the window borders from one theme, with the icon set of another, with a colour scheme of another. It is infinitely customisable – the number of alterations is staggering – I don’t ever use all the default elements of a theme – I change all of it, and get a “theme” that is best for me.
^i second you there is nothing more childish than default XP luna theme.

It is very easy to install Ubuntu themes.
First download the theme file(any of the above).
Then right click on the desktop.
Go to “Change Desktop background”
Then on the “Theme” tab.
You will get a “install” button.
Click on it and locate the file which you have downloaded.
A message will say the theme is installed.
A corresponding theme icon will appear bellow.
You can then apply the theme in your system
just by selecting the theme icon.

Man, it’s hard to find a nice gnome theme. Honestly, from this list, there are only a handful I’d consider trying out.
Different strokes, I guess, but I don’t have a whole lot of luck over at gnome-look, either.
Currently I have Slickness Black for my login, and I’ve even resorted to using a Mac OS X clone (an aqua theme, more white than gray, that I don’t see above)

Freaking list dude, 10x a lot
I’m new to Ubuntu and only a little familiar with Linux but I wanted to give it a try. I downloaded “Raptor Slickness remix” and there is no way to install it. No TAR.GZ, no nothing. None of the instructions posted here work. I downloaded two other themes thinking it was just a fluke. Same thing. Did they change how the themes work and nobody has updated the instructions, or what? I’m using Ubuntu 9.04.
Download the Raptor File, and when thats done Right click and extract to your Desktop.
Then You must open a terminal and run this command:
sudo cp -r $HOME/Desktop/Raptor_v9.2 /usr/share/themes
For me I downloaded the file with the default archive manager right clicked and extracted to my desktop, I then changed the Folder Name to Raptor for ease of use (as I hate complicated filenames).
I then opened up a Terminal and ran this command:
sudo cp -r $HOME/Desktop/Raptor /usr/share/themes
Then go to the System Dropdown menu on your Desktop. Click on Preferences and then Appearance… if you scroll down the themes you should find the raptor one in there..
And thats it
